LEAF in Schools and Streets

LEAF in Schools & Streets Artists Highlights from October 2005:
• Masankho Banda at TC Roberson High School (girls) & Erwin High School (boys) created a Malawian Dance & Rhythm presentation.
• Michael Franti at the Swannanoa Valley Youth Development Center performed and screened his film “I Know I’m Not Alone” .
• Billy Jonas at W.C. Reid Center for Creative Arts
• Darrell Rose at YWCA teaching West African Drumming
• James Nave’ at KIPP Academy teaching Poetry & presentation
• Samputu & Ingeli at the WC Reid Center teaching Rwandan Dance & Music
• LEAF Highlight: When the youth joined Samputu & Ingeli from Rwanda on the main stage carrying words for the song about CHILDREN so the audience to sing along, all were inspired! Total impromptu and bi-lingual improvisation.

When the youth were asked what they learned while participating in LSS, the most common responses were, “I learned to trust myself”, “To have fun” & “To make music”. When asked what their favorite part of the experience was they said, “Performing”! Thank to LEAFers for helping raise funds for LEAF in Schools & Streets through the LEAF Art Raffle , the premier LEAF CD , donations, concessions Tips Jar donations, and Barley’s Pizza and One World which raised funds for Chef Oso to teach Culinary Arts in the schools.

“Kudos! Kudos! Kudos! See them fly in!” Martin

•As we left Lake Eden Arts Festival… Shonnie and I both wept tears of gratitude and sadness. Gratitude for the extraordinary weekend of song, dance, poetry, hiking, healing, crafts, healthy food, play, peaceful energy and, yes, love…..I cannot remember a time in my life when I felt so present, so open, so nonjudgmental, so willing to partake of what was being offered in the present moment. No computers, no cell phones, no PDAs, no TVs, no radios, just the stuff of life. Poets sharing their innermost feelings. Singers singing from the heart. Dancers boogying till the cows come home…. •” ZEN FEST!! So many good things to say.” Kelly

•” The highlight of the festival was watching those beautiful doves being released after the documentary and fly around that gorgeous Carolina blue sky! Everyone was in awe. I thought the whole festival was the best ever! “ Dianne

•”Let me say just how incredible the heart of the music was this time. We always have great music but this time we ascended to a higher place.” Steven

• “Michael Franti was AMAZING!! He is my new hero! And Yerba Buena-WOW-what energy! I danced so hard! AND Emiline! Yipeee....Your doing a great job bringing in the performers with something to say! World music is my passion and it is so wonderful to come there knowing I will get my dose at least twice a year! Marcela

• I just wanted to thank you for all of your help and your volunteers. I had the absolutely best show I've ever had in the past 5 years of my show life! And, I can't say enough how nice the other artists, volunteers, and attendees were. I can completely see how LEAF has such a big following. Laurel

•.” I so respect the diverse, artistic, and loving event that y'all put together. LEAF in Schools & Streets (LSS) is a very powerful component of LEAF's potential to contribute to the richness of experiences for Asheville kids. I greatly appreciate what you facilitated with LSS for this festival!! It seemed very evident in the smiles of pride and joy from the students that they most definitely benefited from their participation and stage performances.” Jae

•Wow! LEAF is such a feast for the senses, all of them. I always feel like I'm leaving heaven when I have to go back to the real world. But I leave soooo satisfied. This festival ran flawless, from my point of view. Thank you for another wonder gift. Jim

•Wonderful Vibe! Loved the diversity & such a receptive audience.
