THE PROJECT: Creating a Music Program at the local Mayan school. The instructor will be Modesto, a young man coming from Felipe Carillo Puerto. He will teach with local Instruments such as the tun kul, a hollow piece of wood hit with 2 mallets, making unique sounds depending on the type of wood and size. A local seamstress will make costumes to inspire community performances.

"Things are going wonderfully with the music project. Attendance has been from 12 to 14. Teacher Modesto has been focussing on rhythm with the tunkules and tambor and to a lesser degree on sounds from the caracol and flautas." - Tom of avl sister cities

"QUE PASA?"

march 2008
Asheville Sister Cities Crew & LEAF Ambassador Sid Heilbraun went to Mexico to offically start the Xocen Music Program. The Mayan Music program is now happening Saturdays in the Xocen square. The teacher, Modesto, is so dedicated to preserving this endangered Mayan music tradition that he drives 80km to teach this enthusiastic group of Mayan youth ranging in ages 4-16yrs. Modesto made all of the Mayan instruments, and the youth are engaged and learning their ancient traditions.

A brief Step into Vallodalid Mexico

VILLAGE: Vallodalid
Located half way between Merida and Cancun, Valladolid is a bustling Mayan city-town that still preserves a special colonial flavor. One sees the majority of the townspeople still using the typical dress of the Mayan, colonial architecture around the Main Plaza and many historical buildings. Xocen is a rural village in the area. The Xocenese only speak Yucatec Maya.

~REFLECTIONS ON MEXICO~ Qué Pasa?

This is an excerpt of Sister Cities Representative letter with whom we are collaborating. It speaks of our commitment and interaction with the local Mexican community and gives insight on the process of the music project currently underway.

“Dear Friends – We are into our third year of trying to get the music project in Xocen off the ground I believe we have made some progress. The second concert was given in the town and the enthusiasm was such that I believe we can proceed with purchasing of instruments, buying of appropriate clothes, and contracting with a teacher for 3 months to come to Xocen Saturday mornings for 12 sessions. The instruments will cost approximately $1,000. The instructor will be Modesto, a young man coming from Felipe Carillo Puerto. He is a member of the group (Hum Batz). ”
